Obituary for William Solomon

William Solomon
Col. William G. Solomon, USAF (Ret.), beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, peacefully passed away on Sept. 26, 2017 at William Childs Hospice House, Palm Bay, surrounded by his family.

Col. Solomon’s last assignment prior to retiring, after 32 years of active duty, was Director, Department of Defense Manned Space Flight Support Office, a joint staff located at Patrick Air Force Base, FL. He also served as Deputy DOD Manager for Manned Space Flight Support Operations (DDMS), during the same 1974-1975 period.

Col. Solomon who was born in Savannah, GA, on Oct. 13, 1924, entered the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet in Apr. 1943 and received his pilot’s rating and commission as a second lieutenant the following Feb. Upon completion of 5 additional months of operational training he was designated first pilot, assigned a crew and new aircraft and flew across the North Atlantic arriving in England Aug. 1944 as an old teenager, age 19. During WWII he flew 61 combat missions and 614 combat hours of air evacuation and combat resupply during four campaigns in the European Theater.

A rated command pilot, he acquired approximately 6,500 flying hours in the B-25 and other medium bombers, 2 and 4 engine transport aircrafts as well as single engine jets.

After WWII, a large portion of his flying was in the capacity as an instructor pilot and instrument flight examiner, as well as, designated pilot for numerous military and civilian VIP’s in the Washington, D.C. area.
He held numerous staff positions at various levels of command throughout the Air Force. While assigned to Air Force Headquarters Command, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., as Director, Operation and Training, Col. Solomon performed additional duties as a White House Aide during Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations.

Following a classified assignment is Southeast Asia in 1966-67, he joined Air Force Systems Command Headquarters, Andrews Air Force Base, MD, and served in several research and development staff positions including Director of Air Operations. Prior to his assignment to Patrick Air Force Base, Col. Solomon, accompanied by his wife Helen, served for three years in a dual capacity as the Department of Defense Attache and Air Force Attache with the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada.

He is a life member of the Military Officers Association and founding member (1975) of the Suntree Country Club. His decorations include the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, European Theater of Operations Award during WWII with four Campaign Stars, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit medals.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Helen in 2016.

Survivors include his daughter, Katherine Mata (Sergio), granddaughters, Chloe and Jasmine Mata, and a large loving extended family. He will be remembered as a man of integrity, always diplomatic, loyal, honest, and loving. He was loved and respected by those who knew him and was a true man of character. Those who came in contact with him would agree they were better off having met him.

A visitation will be held on Sat. Oct. 7, 2017 at Beach Funeral Homes – East, Indian Harbour Beach from 9-10am with a service to begin at 10am. Col. Solomon will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery will full military honors at a later date.
