Obituary for Arthur Nolan

Arthur Joseph Nolan was born to Walter Nolan and Gertrude Flynn Nolan in Union City, New Jersey on August 14, 1923. A genuine icon of “the greatest generation,” Arthur served in WWII in the South Pacific and Asia, as a pilot of a C47 Troop Carrier aircraft, in New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon. There he flew 600 combat zone hours. His Unit, the 46th Troop Carrier Squadron, was awarded the Presidential Distinguished Unit citation and Arthur earned a Bronze Star for his service.

After completing his military service, Arthur earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in History and Political Science from Columbia University. He then started a lengthy career in federal public service, including serving as a Budget Analyst in the Bureau of the Budget (now OMB) in the Executive Office of the President, and a Procurement Analyst at the National Cancer Institute, NIH and then with the Federal Aviation Administration, from which he retired in 1997. He took a brief respite from public service to teach government procurement of defense contracts while serving on the faculty of Ohio State University and Temple University.

Arthur is survived by a niece, Karen Sherwood, and nephew, Neil Ulrich, and predeceased by his parents and his sister, Jane Nolan Ulrich of Morristown, NJ. A bachelor until the age of 54, Arthur met and married Ann Wengler Nolan in 1977, who predeceased Arthur in December 2016. Arthur became the beloved step-father to Ann’s sons, Timothy, Michael and Daniel Gillam, all currently residing in Brevard County, FL. Over the years, his family grew, as he gained daughters-in-law, grandsons, grand daughters-in-law, and great grandsons. His legacy will be one of a loving and generous heart, and his epic story-telling, political debates and history lessons will be missed by all who knew him.
