Obituary for Alvin Franklin Garner

Alvin Franklin Garner

Alvin Garner was born at home January 1, 1932. As our dad would say, “Everybody Celebrates My Birthday!” He was one of four children born to James and Mae Garner in McKenzie Alabama.
Dad spent his early life on the family farm in Alabama. In addition to farm work, he loved to fish, and hunt. He was a pretty good shot too. As he put it, he could “knock a gnat off a bullfrog.”
Later in life, while serving in the U.S. Air Force, he was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida where he met Jane, who became his wife in 1958. The family grew over the next few years to include four children: Elizabeth, Catherine, Brooks, and Russell. They remained married until Jane’s passing in 2012.
Dads initials were AFG, which some said stood for Air Force Garner.
He was part of the Strategic Air Command working on B-47’s, B-52’s, KC-135’s and other Aircraft. While stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa Florida, he towed a B-47 bomber into hanger 5 and helped wax it. That bomber and hanger were used for a key scene in the 1955 movie “Strategic Air Command” starring James Stewart and June Allyson.
He served on many Air Force Bases both foreign and domestic, including MacDill in Florida, Bunker Hill in Indiana, Warner Robbins in Georgia, U-Tapao in Thailand, McCoy AFB in Orlando, Florida, Patrick AFB, Guam, and finally Barksdale AFB in Louisiana.
While in the Air Force, he completed 1 and 1/2 years of college earning his AA degree.
He retired From the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana on February 28, 1979 after 26 years 1 month and 8 days on active duty.
He served another 16 years in Civil Service working multiple jobs including the Base Commissary, Motor Pool, and then finally back with his beloved aircraft in Transient Maintenance at Patrick Air Force Base. Those are the guys who drive the “Follow Me” trucks for visiting aircraft. Between the U.S. Air Force and Civil Service, he worked a combined 42 years for the Department of Defense.
Dad was fun to talk to and had a few sayings that were hard to forget. Whether you were the one not catching fish or just couldn’t get something to fit on one of the multiple machines he could fix, he would just say, “Yer Not Holdin’ Yer Mouth Right.”
Dad was always busy with a project and was hard to keep up with. He could fix anything or grow anything. He was always willing to help out family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers.
He lived a full life. In his later years, he would often say “I Want to Be A Blessing To Someone Everyday;” And he was.
Dad loved the Air Force. He loved his family. But above all, he loved the Lord.
Early in his life, he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
Dad’s passing is painful. The void he leaves is huge and his passing hurts. But as believers in Salvation in Jesus, we know that he is rejoicing in Heaven. Those of us who are also saved know that we too will leave this earth one day. Our sister Catherine said it best when she said, “Dad is in our future.”
Even though we are all hurting right now knowing that we will see him again gives us a peace and comfort that is beyond description.
If dad were here right now, he would tell you, don’t leave this earth without accepting Jesus as your Savior.
He leaves behind his Brother Ord, Sister Marie, his children, Catherine, Brooks, and Russell, and daughter-in-law Virginia, and Grandson Noah.
