Obituary for Geoffrey Arthur Smith

Geoffrey Arthur Smith, 74, passed away suddenly on November 23, 2018 in Melbourne, Florida of a heart attack.

Geoffrey was born in Bristol, England in 1943 to George A. Smith and Laura May Harris . Through a previous marriage, Geoff had a son Roger Geoffrey Smith. He married his partner and soulmate, Melodi Shoemaker in July, 2011 in the historic Roman city of Bath, England. As a teen he played football and cricket competitively at a county level. During the 60s, he served 10 years in the Royal Air Force. Stationed in Adan, Guam and Singapore, he received an Electrical Engineering and Radar Technology degree. Geoff had a brilliant aerospace career beginning at British Aerospace in Bristol, England working on Ariane Space missions and the Hubble Telescope. At the age of 36, he made the bold decision to immigrate himself and family to the United States when he had the opportunity to work for Boeing in Seattle, Washington. Later he relocated to Huntsville, Alabama to work on space shuttle missions and finally moved to Melbourne, Florida to become Senior Principal Engineer for SpaceHab. Before retiring, he worked as Systems Engineering and Integration liaison for Sierra Lobo supporting NASA's Constellation Program and specifically the Ares 1-X Mission which flew successfully in October of 2009.

Geoff is survived by his devoted wife, Melodi A. Shoemaker; a loving son, Roger A. Smith and his wife Heather, and three wonderful granddaughters Alice, Suzy, and Autumn.

In addition, Geoff is cherished by many friends and relatives who loved him dearly and have been inspired by his huge respect for those who fought in World War 1. Geoff wanted everyone to know about the sacrifices made by these brave men for our freedom today. Loving history in general, he also claimed to be “Southern by the Grace of God” because of his admiration for the plight of the Confederacy at the hands of the Union in the American Civil War. If there was a ball involved, Geoff enjoyed it. His many passions included golf (at one time very competitively), college football (Roll Tide!), baseball (Go Mariners!), and his own English football (soccer) team since age 12, the Bristol City Robins. His other passions included bridge, music from Bluegrass to Rock, and traveling internationally with, Melodi, friends and family.

Geoff will be greatly missed by many. He will be returned to his beloved England by his son and laid to rest next to is Mother and Father.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to one of the following charities listed under the Place a Donation tab.
