Karl Brandel Jr., beloved husband of Mary Anne Flavin, passed away in the early hours of Sep. 18, 2018. He was predeceased by his parents Karl Brandel Sr. and Elisabeth Roese Brandel. He is survived by his wife Mary, step-daughter Catherine, through whom he has four grandchildren, and his cousins Karl and Grace Ann Roese and Tommy Roese.
He was born on Dec. 18, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating high school, Karl served in the Air Force. He attended Ohio State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, the foundation for a lifelong career serving significant American defense and aerospace institutions. After working as a test engineer at several companies, Karl joined Northrop Grumman to work at the Kennedy Space Center on the shuttle program. Karl and Mary were married on Satellite Beach on April 30, 1994. Shortly after, their work took them west. Karl became a member of the staff of Boeing Defense, Space and Security in Irving, Texas before retiring and moving back to the Florida coast in 2001.
Karl was always tinkering with and maintaining his many vehicles, including two antique BMW motorcycles which he kept in pristine condition. If it moved, Karl enjoyed it. He was an avid biker who would pedal great distances, a sailor who enjoyed taking his small boat on the Indian River, and a beach lover. Karl also played a great game of tennis and loved traveling internationally with Mary.
Karl will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
