Obituary

It is with the heaviest of heavy hearts that family and friends of Harold R. (Dick) Frahn bid him a final farewell. Dick passed peacefully at age 85 at Holmes Regional Medical Center on January 21st with family and friends by his side.

At the age of 20 Dick enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Radio Specialist. While stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington state Dick met his wife Beverly Pike. The two married on 4/20/1957 and shortly afterwards, at the rank of E-5, Staff Sergeant, Dick applied for and was accepted into Officer Candidate School (OCS) where he successfully graduated as a Second Lieutenant. Subsequent to his OCS graduation Dick applied for and was accepted into Air Force Navigator school where he graduated as Navigator. He was assigned as an aircrew member of KC-97 Stratotankers and later transitioned to the aircrew of KC-135 Stratotankers.

Dick's military career spanned nearly the entirety of the Vietnam War. He served several tours of duty in Southeast Asia supporting America's efforts to stave off the communist takeover of South Vietnam. While serving in Southeast Asia Captain Frahn and his entire crew were awarded the "Air Medal" for valiantly saving two F-4 Phantom fighter pilots over hostile territory. When the May Day call came across the radio Captain Frahn and his crew were returning to base from a completed mission. The orders came over the radio for his crew to return to base while another KC-135 was dispatched to respond to the F-4 pilots call for help. Captain Frahn knew the responding KC-135 would not reach the F-4s in time. He had a choice to make knowing his aircraft was the fighter pilots' best and only hope. Defying orders, Captain Frahn provided coordinates for his aircrew commander that would take them into the path of the distressed F-4s. His crew would go on to provide the two F-4s with the much-needed fuel over hostile territory enabling them to return safely to their base in South Vietnam.

After serving the Air Force and the country honorably for twenty years, Major Frahn retired from active duty at McCoy Air Force Base in Orlando Florida. Dick and his wife Beverly relocated the family to Satellite Beach, Florida and Dick began his second career working in the Finance industry. His second career would take him for short relocations to Jacksonville, Florida and to Orlando, Florida. Dick and Bev eventually returned to the Space Coast and settled in his current residence in Indian Harbour Beach.

Dick achieved much throughout his life as a military member, manager, husband, father and friend. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He is survived by son Harold Frahn Jr. (Rick), Brandon, Florida, his daughters Shannon Wilson, Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, Elmerene Young, Lake Butler, Florida and Charlene Gunn, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He is also survived by granddaughters Samantha Frahn, Stephanie Wilson, Brandy Emery, and great-granddaughter Destiny Young.

A memorial service will be held at Beach Funeral Home on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 1 PM. Afterwards a Celebration of Life will be held with family and friends at the Moose Lodge, Indian Harbour Beach.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Dick's name to Moose Heart Moose Haven charities.
