Obituary

Catherine Mae Jolley Bussey passed peacefully April 11, 2019 surrounded by her children. Catherine was born on April 30, 1935 in Evansville, Indiana to Will Jolley and Anna Florence Brumlow Jolley, she was the sixth of seven children. She was raised in Louisville, Kentucky where she attended Catholic school through her junior year of high school, followed by a trade school her senior year while working as a long-distance telephone operator to financially help her family.

At the age of 18 Catherine joined the United States Navy attending Navy Basic Training at Great Lakes, Michigan, and radio school in Bainbridge, Maryland. While in the Navy, Catherine met and married her husband of 55 years, William L. Bussey, Sr. They began their family which would grow to include seven children.

Catherine continued to support her country and her husband by working as the Ombudsman and Enlisted Wives Club President for the U.S.S. Newport News while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia during the early and mid-1960s. Moving to Groton, Connecticut in the late 1960s, Catherine was active with the scouts, even serving as a Cub Scout den mother.

After moving to Atoka, Oklahoma Catherine became active in the small Catholic Church community, and represented the Church in the Atoka Founders Day Parade and play. When the Diocese was left without servers during Holy Week, Catherine drove her own sons to an adjoining town to serve as altar boys for daily morning mass. All while her husband was deployed at war in Da Nang, Republic of South Vietnam in 1970 – 71. Later returning to Virginia Beach with her family in 1971, Catherine worked at Murray's Steaks, also the lady’s department at Sears in the Pembroke Mall.

During the summer of 1977 William Sr. was stationed at Mayport Navy Station moving the family to Florida. For the next 20 plus years, this is where the Bussey’s would raise their family, including “adopting” numerous friends of their children. Catherine would say, “There is always room for one more!” During those years Catherine also ran an at-home-daycare, volunteered at her children’s schools and eventually went on to be a daycare director at Bethlehem Lutheran Day care in Jacksonville Beach. She was very proud of her work in child care. Children were everything to her. Another famous Mrs. Bussey quote, “My favorite grandchild is the one I am with at the moment!”

While raising their family over the next 20 years the Bussey’s attended and were dedicated to St. John’s Catholic Church in Atlantic Beach before deciding to move to Rockledge, Florida in June of 1998. The couple retired to live on the river, a small peaceful place where she would enjoy the making and painting of her ceramics. Catherine once again made an impact on her community. Always loving every child, young and old. Treating all as if they were her own until she went home to meet the Lord.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her son William L. Bussey, II, her parents, three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by six children; Carol Bussey of Rockledge FL, Steven Bussey (Veronica Bussey) of Melbourne FL, Larry Bussey (Linda Bussey) of Live Oak FL, Beth Bussey of Atlantic Beach FL, Jennifer Pritchett (Joe Pritchett) of Rockledge FL and Sarah Bussey-Wilkerson (Alan Wilkerson) of Indian Harbour Beach FL, 21 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren with one on the way.
