Obituary

Frederick Galvin Cogswell Sr, was welcomed to his heavenly and just reward on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019, sent by a loving and loyal family at his bedside. This followed a near-four year heroic and noble battle with blood cancer.

Born September 15, 1943 to Ann (nee Galvin) and Frank S Cogswell in Louisville, Kentucky, Fred was a 1962 graduate of St Xavier High School. After one year at Villanova University he enlisted in the U.S. Army and joined the Army Security Agency Cryptography unit. In 1964 he married his high school sweetheart, Marie Mahoney, and served his first year at Arlington Hall in Arlington, VA, where his first son Fredrick Jr. was born at Walter Reed hospital in 1965. He was then briefly assigned to duty on the island of Shemya, in the Aleutian chain. In the fall of 1965 Marie and Fred Jr. followed Fred to his new duty station at Camp Drake, Tokyo, Japan which was communications headquarters during the Vietnam War. During their two years there they welcomed their second son, John Christopher in 1967.

Following Fred's four years of military service he returned to Louisville in 1967 to assume the reigns of owner and president of the family business, Derby Cap Manufacturing Company, where he spent the next 32 years. During these early years he was an active member of the Beuchel Fern Creek Jaycees, which chapter garnered recognition as the top Jaycee chapter in the nation for two years consecutively. It was also during this time that Fred and Marie completed their family with the addition of a daughter, Heather Ann.

Fred and Marie arrived in Brevard in 2008, joining Holy Name of Jesus parish. Thereafter Fred was able to further participate in his love of oil painting. He relished living in a setting surrounded by water. His other great joy of traveling internationally took him to various other countries while living in Florida.

Fred is survived by his his wife of 54 years, Marie, sons Fred G. Cogswell Jr., John Christopher (Amparito), and daughter Heather Ann, (Craig), and five grandchildren: Emmalee, Hudson, Sandon, Gabriel, and Rafael. The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the bone marrow transplant team, and Dr. David Sallaman and Nurse Joel Stettler of the Hematology unit at Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, as well as Dr. James Neel and his staff in Melbourne. The family also salutes neurosurgeon Dr. Nam Tran, also of Moffitt CC for the three procedures he performed to alleviate Fred's back pain under difficult circumstances. The care Fred received from all of these was truly extra
ordinary and a great comfort to him and his family.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions in Fred's name to Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL.
