Obituary of Daniel K. Beirne

Dr. Daniel K. Beirne God has called home one of his United States Marines. Daniel K. Beirne M.D. died at his home on Friday, January 8th, 2010 surrounded by his loving wife, Lady Shirley Beirne, and their children, Catherine Beirne, Helen Beirne Housewright, her husband Clark, Frances Beirne Hunter, her husband Travis, and Daniel K. Beirne, II, his wife Kelly. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Danielle Marie Green, Joseph "Michael" Green, Katherine "Katie" Beirne Housewright and Ryan Walker Beirne. His surviving siblings are his brothers, Dr. Michael and Patrick Beirne and his sister Betty Barrett. Dr. Beirne was born in Towanda, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the National University of Ireland in 1958. His pediatric training was at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia under Dr. Koop. He was also Director of clinical research at Hoffman La Roche, Medical Director of Sudler and Hennessy, an advertising and public relations firm in Manhattan, and executive vice president of Krooks-Barnes, Chemway Corp. He moved to the Brevard County area in 1971 where he became the Director of Emergency Services at Holmes Regional Medical Center. In 1979 he opened a private Family Practice in Indian Harbour Beach. He was a Board certified Family practitioner, a chartered member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, a fellow emeritus of the American College of Nutrition and a member of the Brevard County Medical Society. On retirement he was an active consultant for the Florida Department of Professional Regulation and the Joint Committee of Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAH). Dr. Beirne was a Korean War veteran, and was actively involved in the Veterans of Foreign wars, in particular the Beirne-Webster Post #1568, named after his brother John. Dr. Beirne known also as USMC Captain Beirne was a strong supporter of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, the Knights of Columbus (Fourth Degree) and the American Legion. Arrangements have been entrusted to Beach Funeral Home. The public is invited to a memorial service to be conducted at Holy Name of Jesus Church on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 4 p.m. with a reception immediately to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation or the American Legion.
