Obituary of Robert H. Stier

Indialantic resident Robert H. Stier passed away peacefully on April 27, 2010 after a brief illness. An active and vital man with many interests, he had lived in Florida for twenty-two years. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Lois Lindahl Stier in 2000. Always learning, Bob became an avid sailor in retirement and greatly enjoyed cruising the Intracoastal Waterway with friends in his boat, the Bon Ton. He was an exceptional bridge player and enjoyed regular card games with a group of close friends. He loved genealogy and travel, and in recent years spent time exploring the Stier ancestral home in Marburg, Germany and vineyards and villages along the Rhone and Rhine rivers. Born in Chicago, Bob grew up in Baltimore and after graduating high school at 16, attended Purdue University, as his father had done before him. He later received an MBA from the University of Chicago. After serving in the Army at the end of World War II, he started his career as a salesman with Ryerson Steel in Chicago, and with his unique combination of quick wit, attention to detail and superb social skills, quickly advanced to become sales manager. Following twenty years in Illinois at Ryerson, his career trajectory then took him to New Orleans, where he became vice president of sales for Glazer Steel. After 9 years entertaining customers and friends at various Sugar Bowls, Super Bowls, and Mardi Gras events in Louisiana, he left to become president of Gatewood Products in Parkerburg, West Virginia. He finished his career in Los Angeles in 1992 as president of Atlas Steel. He married Lois Lindahl in 1951 and enjoyed forty-nine years of marriage. He was particularly proud of Lois' accomplishments as an award-winning watercolor artist. He also took enormous pleasure in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, with whom he was able to share his love of learning and his commitment to family. He will be sadly missed by his son, Robert Stier, Jr. and his wife MaryEllen FitzGerald of Cape Elizabeth, ME; his daughter, Sandra Seiler and her husband Earnest of Indialantic, FL; and his brother, Howard Stier and his wife Marion of Lenexa, KS. He will also be mourned by his grandchildren, Ross Martin of Atlanta, GA; Meghan Garcia-Webb of Cambridge, MA; Erik Stier of Cairo, Egypt; and Maeve Stier of Cape Elizabeth, ME; as well as his nephews, Don Stier, Wes Stier, Ron Lindahl, and nieces, Bambi Robinson, Jocelyn Allison and Kathy Pfaff. A gathering will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 8, 2010, at Beach Funeral Home, Indian Harbour Beach, with the Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
