I was lucky to have been a teaching assist to Dr. Baum while I was getting my M.S. in Environment Science back in the mid-80's. What a tremendous teacher, scholar and friend. RIP doc...you did good!

I don't think I could personally write enough fantastic things about Dr. Baum. He was my teacher, advisor, mentor, confidant, and friend. He always had time for me, which I so appreciate now that I'm a mom and seem to have very little. I'll always remember his patience when I couldn't pick up thermodynamics as quickly as the rest of the class. And someone calming about his voice.. he had a fantastic way of speaking that was calming, thoughtful and confident. I still remember his potato chips in a plastic bag, or his homemade sandwich he brought every day from home for lunch. I was lucky to be friends with his son, Matt, since we were both on FIT's rowing team-- and am thankful we get to check in online periodically. Dr. Baum (I still can't call him Clayton! :P) helped shape years of my life when I felt lost.. and I will be forever grateful for such a wonderful person to have been able to spend time with. Even when I left Florida, moved to Pennsylvania, and eventually to California, I tried to stay in touch with him. I wish I had more than I did. Big hugs to Matt and Katie, and family-- I wish I could bring him back for just a bit longer.

I had the privilege of knowing Clayton during our time in graduate school at Princeton, and we remained in contact ever since. He was a good man in every sense of the word. I'll always remember his kind-hearted good nature and his quiet sense of humor that shone through even in the most difficult times. I hold him in great esteem and affection and feel honored to have been a friend.

I knew Clayton for the 23 years I worked for the library at Florida Tech. He served on the faculty library committee for most, if not all of those years. His keen intellect, compassion and dedication were inspiring. He was loved and admired by the entire academic community. I remember how very proud he was when his son went off to college. He was a bright shining star like no other.

I knew Clayton when I worked at Florida Tech in the 1990's as VP for Research and Graduate Dean. He was funny and smart and we shared the experience of earning our doctorates at Princeton. I was so sad to read of his passing. His care and concern for all students, especially undergraduates, was laudatory. He'll be missed. I send his children and his family my sincere condolences.

I first knew Clayton from working together on the FIT Faculty Senate back in the early 90's. I greatly admired him as a teacher who had an exceptional love for education and his students, a truly gifted researcher, and a strong advocate for important faculty welfare issues. His retirement four years ago was a great loss to the Florida Tech Community and I mourn his loss. RIP my friend and colleague.
