Obituary of James Howard Kress

James Howard Kress, 92, passed away at home on Monday, July 20, 2020, surrounded by his family.

James “Jim” was born on September 17, 1927 in Decatur, Illinois, where he was raised by his grandparents. Jim graduated from high school in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, where he met his wife, Betty Jean. Jim and Jean were married in L.A. on December 14, 1950. They went on to have three children, James “Craig”, Randy, and Janet.

Jim had a brilliant career as an engineer that began when he was enlisted in the Navy from 1945-1948 as an Electronics Technician Second Class. He spent this time traveling the world to places like Africa, the Seychelle Islands and other locations throughout the Middle East.

Jim spent the next part of his professional career as an engineer for Federal Electric, and eventually for Pan American Aerospace Division.

Jim’s greatest career accomplishment came in 1976 when he founded Tournament Tackle Inc., located in Satellite Beach, Florida. Jim’s first breakthrough was when he patented the Ilander lure. The lure was initially named the Hawaiian Eye and was later changed to the Ilander. The lure was designed to troll at high speeds on the way out to the fishing grounds. The Ilander accounted for several innovations that can be found on many lures today: It was the first true high-speed trolling lure, the first to have permanent nylon skirts and the first to use realistic eyes. Along with his wife Betty Jean, Jim built a successful business, and to this day, the Ilander is recognized as one of the top 10 deep-sea lures of all time.

Even into his eighties, Jim enjoyed designing lures and could often be found in his workshop, brainstorming new ideas or working on some kind of woodwork masterpiece, as he was also an exceptional woodworker.

Above all his earthly accomplishments, Jim was best known as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He exuded a peaceful spirit and a gentle, calming presence. He was a deep thinker, leading a quiet, private life that revolved around family and work. His generosity was un-matched and his love for his wife, children and grandchildren was endless, as is our love for him. He will forever be our “Prince Charming”.
