Obituary of Joseph Gilbert Waters

Joseph Gilbert Waters was born in Maryville, Tennessee on September 26, 1937. He graduated from the University of Tennessee as president of his fraternity, Sigma Epsilon.

 

Joe began his military service with the Marine Reserve, serving for seven years. He wanted to be a pilot and found he was too old at 26, to be a pilot for the Marine Corps. After learning he could train to be a pilot for the Air Force he joined them to follow his passion.  Lt. Col. Waters retired after 20 years of service with the Military Air Lift Command and through his service was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Metal, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Expeditionary Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal. He continued his love for the sky by piloting for Midway Airlines and Air Aruba until his forced retirement at the age of 60. He continued working for Flight Safety International for over 20 years, until he officially left at the age of 82.

 

Joe and his beloved wife and best friend Tracy traveled the world together including places like South America and Europe. After many boating trips to Bimini, Bahamas together and with friends, they continued exploring the islands through cruising several times a year. Joe’s legacy is his love for Tracy and his family, as well as his adventurous and gentle spirit.

 

Joe passed away on November 25, 2020, in Indian Harbour Beach, Fl. with his wife at his side.

 

He’s survived by his wife Tracy of 29 years; his daughters Melinda (Meg) and her partner Kay Love and Monica; sister Patricia and her husband Doug; and nephews Michael and Brian.
