Bill and I go back a long way. It was in 1970 that he arrived at the 366th USAF Hospital Squadron in DaNang, RVN. We spent most of that year sharing a small room and sharing our separate daily experiences caring for patients at that large air-base. Our friendship continued ever since although he, stationed and later practicing in Florida, and me, stationed in Tucson and then taking more medical training in Houston, eventually practicing in WA state.
We were in frequent contact as our families developed and grew, visiting with each other, fishing in the Gulf with his family from his wonderful boat, and occasionally traveling together in the NW. We knew and loved his wife Ellen and their 3 children. We grieved together when Ellen sadly passed several years ago; we all never got over that. Their house in Merritt Island is a testimonial to her influence; obvious to anyone who gets the privilege of visiting it.
We are so happy that son James, whom we have known since birth, will now likely get to reside there. Perhaps he will also join the nearby Eau Gallie Yacht Club so when we visit, he might be able to take us there once again as we did with Bill so often.
One of our most recent visits included a sentimental return to Vietnam with a group of Army & Marine veterans that we had located via an article in a boating magazine that Bill had sent me. We spent 2 weeks touring Battlefield Sites and were able to include several days in DaNang where the friendship all began. We hired a local driver and were able to have him take us to many places we both recalled from our time there.
These included where we thought we had lived [the "hootch", now their modern airport terminal], our flight-line hospital [now their cargo area],"Monkey" and "Marble" Mountains, and of course "China Beach", where we knew one day would be the site of luxury hotels. At the tour's end we all got to spend some time at the US Marine Barracks in Hanoi - photo included here - a city we surely thought in 1970 we would NEVER get to visit in person.
I am very saddened indeed to have lost one of my oldest friends.
