Mary Whelan

Obituary of Mary Whelan

Mary Whelan was born in Berea, Ohio surrounded by extended family. She married her high school sweetheart, Rod Whelan. They shared their life for 72 years, until his passing in 2020. Together they had seven children, two pre-deceased, 18 grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Mary was devoted to her family; siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and especially all the offspring. She never forgot a birthday or special occasion. Most of all, she was devoted to her husband, finding ways to share his interests. They worked on restoring a steam rail train in the southwest, and traveled to race tracks all over the country. They enjoyed annual trips to California for wine-tasting, and travelling to jazz concerts across the continent. They would sign emails “from the wandering grandparents”. Mary was also an avid reader, and loved puzzles. She set an example with her warmth, and welcoming spirit. No one was left out, she always made room. She was flexible and creative and had a great sense of humour, as well as a keen insight into who people really are. Mary passed away peacefully at Zon Beachside on November 17 at age 95. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to research of Parkinson’s Disease.
