Its hard to say just how I feel about Bob. He is someone that I have known since I met my wife, Kanani, his sister, many years ago. I never really thought about ever losing him. The loss hit me hard and I never really knew how much I loved and respected him. The pain is still there on this one year anniversary of his death, and I suppose it will never go away. I never got to tell him that he was one of my heroes for his patriotism and his service to his country, but beyond that he was a servant to his family, friends, his church and his community. I'm sure if I tried to tell him that, he would not want to hear it. He was a great role model to all that were associated with him. His actions in all the above-mentioned activities set the example of how one is supposed to live. His love and dedication to his family gives as clear picture of his character. I could go on forever telling what a great man, though not perfect, I thought he was. But I will say that he did know someone that was perfect, Jesus Christ. I know where Bob is and I will see him again.

Hard to believe it's been almost a year since Bob's passing. During the year I worked with him at the Emergency Operation Center, he was a great mentor, confidant, and friend. Bob and I would occasonally run into each other at the Walmart Supermarket on Wickham Rd. and talk with each other for 5-10 minutes catching each other up on whats been happening. I truly respected Bob Lay's character and integrity. He was quite a man. Warmest memories of Bob on the anniversary of his passing.

Patti, thank you so much for sharing your grief with us. How sad to think that Bob will no longer be whipping out his funny one liners and then looking at you like "what are you laughing at." We will always remember our California days and our days at the beach and Big Sur with you guys. You're right, Patti, those were the days....we were young, happy and our two families had such great times. We love you, Patti, and will hold you close to our hearts in prayer. We can only begin to imagine the void in your heart without Bob, and we pray that each day is a little better than the day before. Take your time and do it your way, Patti. Our hearts go out to Sherri, Ed and Brandon and their families. May God's grace ease your pain and may He keep you always in His gaze.

We are saddened to hear of Bob's passing. Our condolences to you, patti and the family. Bob was a great classmate of 65-1W, a proud veteran and good friend that we did not see often enough these past years. We have wonderful memories of flight school, flying together in Vietnam, sharing time at our reunion. We will MISS our good friend. God Bless

If you just looked on the surface at Bob Lay's life, you would see a devoted family man, provider for his family, a good friend to his neighbors and his co-workers and a man devoted to his church and community. But, looking deeper, you would see a war hero, a leader in his community, a humanitarian, a leader in his profession and a role-model for his family, peers, and friends. You would also see a Christian that did the things that a Christian is supposed to do. His greatest witness was the life that he lead. You would see a humble man that never bragged about his accomplishments, although he had a lot to boast about. Knowing all of the above I know that there is more to his story than I ever knew because he did not pat himself on the back for the things that God had him do. I am so thankful and so honored to have been a part of his life. I'm thankful for his relationship with Kanani and for his love and friendship for all these years. He would not boast, but I can brag about him and be proud of all he accomplished in his life. I could tell a lot of stories about Bob. I'll just keep those sweet memories and end by saying that I just love the guy. My brother-n-law, my friend, I'll see you again someday.

After returning from an extended trip, I was shock to see the obituary notice of Bob's sudden passage. Col Lay was a tremendous support when I took over command of the 1189TTU out of Tampa. When our mission moved to Jacksonville, Col Lay use to get a bird from McDill AFB to fly us to Jax, quite a treat for a reserve commander back in the early 90's. May the angels fly him now to Paradise, and may his family heal bathed the memories of a great leader. Bob, rest in peace my friend, John E Kovach, Col, USA Retired
