Dear Family of Dick Cannata, I am a long time friend of Dick's from all the many steel drum festivals we have attended over the years. I am currently at the Denver Panramajay Festival and found out today that Dick has passed. I was waiting to see him walk through the door before I heard the sad news. We are all so terribly shocked and sad to hear this. I met Dick at his first festival in Wheeling, WV the summer of 2003 and have seen him every summer since. I have been a pan teacher/performer in San Luis Obispo, CA all these years and Dick helped me so much with my computer issues and we exchanged music many times online. He was such a warm, intelligent and caring person and I know I speak for all of us here that he will be sorely missed. The pan world has lost a truly talented and dedicated advocate. Please know that we mourn your loss. My condolences, Patty Dee

I was saddened to hear of Dick's passing when I arrived at steel drum camp. We played steel drum together for many years. I will miss his quick wit and love of life. One of my favorite memories was when we kept trading clothespins on the back of our shirts as a prank. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Judy Walter

When we arrived at the annual steel drum workshop, my family and I were deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Dick's sudden passing. We have so many fond memories of him; his laugh, his love of the steel pan and his true caring nature will always stay with us. One of our favorite memories was day he accompanied us to the top of Pike's Peak. Dick was one of the first people I met nearly a decade ago when we both arrived at our first workshop and we played beside each other and shared our passion every year since. It's difficult to imagine playing the concert without him, but I know his spirit will fill the entire band. Todd, Nyla and Abbey Phillips

Dear Cannata family, I was only privileged to know Richard for a short time, through our mutual love of steel drums - but he touched my heart with his joy for life and his kind way of being. I will miss his warm smile, his love of music and his eagerness to always keep learning and growing. Please accept my deepest condolences. I grieve with you. Rose Meier Fairbanks Alaska

To Pat and Family, may your grief be less painful and that you gain some comfort in knowing that Dick is missed by many, many friends and associates here in Florida and the business community. When Steve called with the news of Dick, I was deeply saddened to learn that we had lost a true patriot and gentleman of the business world. Our first meeting in DC...me as a recent Air Force convert to Harris... and Dick questioning the viability of his transition...we "clicked" on many fronts. Through the years together we traded ideas, strategies and shared experiences "to make a difference". We "MAC'ed" together when MAC was not popular. In later years we lost touch, much to my regret. Memories from the "compadre days" will always be treasured.

Please accept my sympathy at this time. When I worked with Dick at Harris, one thing we could always agree upon was that our families were the most important part of our lives. He was so proud of his family and would just beamed whenever sharing a story.
