Obituary of Walter Eugene Lane

Walter "Ace" Lane, 93, passed away in Satellite Beach, Florida on Friday, August 10, 2012. He was born April 29, 1919 in Dante, Virginia. Ace Lane was a veteran of the United State Army Air Corp and served in World War II as a liaison pilot. Ace and his family came to Brevard County from Erwin, Tennessee in 1954. After teaching one year at Cocoa High, he worked at Cape Canaveral helping to pioneer America's space program. He was involved in the design and testing of rocketry and telemetry systems in the Bomarc, Minuteman and Apollo programs. Walt Lane was a professor at Brevard Community College, Cocoa, Florida and an author whose works include "Cape Canaveral: The Early Days", "L-Pilots of WWII", "Fifty Years of Flying", "Nolichucky, The Pardo Expedition" and "Railroads of Appalachia". Mr. Lane is survived by his wife of 62 years, Estella, sons, John and James M., daughters-in-law Judy and Nicole, granddaughter, Nina and great-granddaughter, Alice. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary. A celebration of Walt's life will be held at Ramp Road Park in Cocoa Beach on Sunday, September 16 at 10:00 a.m.
