Obituary of Charles William Pekar

CHARLES WILLIAM PEKAR Charles W. Pekar, 89, of 4441 Stack Blvd., Melbourne, Florida, died peacefully in his sleep at 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, four months after a diagnosis of lung cancer. Charles came to Brevard County in Oct.1993 from Syracuse, New York, after he retired from his career as a finance manager at Sperry New Holland. Previously, he worked for International Harvester in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Born in Baltimore, MD on Dec. 11, 1922, Charles is the son of Cecilia J. Palucka and Paul Joseph Pekar. A graduate of Calvert Hall and Johns Hopkins University, he was a staff sergeant in the Army and a veteran of World War II before his marriage to Shirley Evelyn Price on Aug. 25, 1954. Surviving are five daughters: Kathleen Colucci of Southbury, CT., Carolyn Pekar of Stow, MA., Elaine Christine of Merritt Island, FL., Elizabeth Esquivel of Torrance, CA., and Jennifer Greene of Winchester, MA., and ten grandchildren: Matthew, Katie, Andrew, Joshua, Thomas Ryan, Erika, Justin, Brittany, Ethan and Eva. One great-grandchild is due in May, 2013. Three cousins: Ellen Etchison of Catonsville, MD., Virginia Murphy of Arbutus, MD., and Dorothy Quill of Wildwood Crest, N.J. are also surviving. Charles was a member of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Indialantic, FL. Monsignor David Page officiated the funeral mass held for Charles in the chapel on Nov. 27th, 2012, at 11:00 am. Graveside services with military honors will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA. Beach Funeral Home of Indian Harbor Beach, FL. is in charge of arrangements set for the spring of 2013. "My father was a handsome, active, religious, frugal and intellectual man with a dry wit who loved his five daughters equally," his daughter Elaine Christine said.
