Obituary of Donald Adrian Schaafsma

Donald Adrian Schaafsma, 76 of Satellite Beach, passed away on Saturday April 2, 2011. He was born in Plainfield, New Jersey to Adrian and Elizabeth Schaafsma. Donald was great with people and spent his career in human resources. He enjoyed a second career working with persons with disabilities at the Association for Retarded Citizens in NJ and FL. After his retirement he worked as a curator for the Liberty Bell Museum in Melbourne, FL. Donald moved to Satellite Beach in 1982 and was a parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Church where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a member of the Masterwork Chorus and Ducks Unlimited in New Jersey. Donald was a lifelong fisherman and a voracious reader. He loved his faith, family, and the outdoors. Donald was preceded in death by his brother Andrew Bruce. Survivors include, his loving wife of 48 years, Marlene; four sons, George Schaafsma of Melbourne, FL., Greg Schaafsma of Margate, FL., Gerry Schaafsma (Olga) of Indialantic, Fl., and Tom MacDonald (Lori) of Lawrence, KS; a daughter, Gail Routon (Shain) of Peachtree City, GA.; and seven grandchildren, Shelby, Jackson, Anna, Cristina, Abby, Sofia and Emma. Arrangements have been entrusted to Beach Funeral Homes with a gathering of family and friends at Holy Name of Jesus Church on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. with a Mass to begin at 11:00 a.m., Committal service will take place in the church garden immediately following the Mass.
