Donald Howard Slusher, MD

( May 5, 1930 – May 23, 2020 )

Donald H. Slusher, MD passed away on May 24, 2020 at the age of 90.

Don was born on a farm in Butler County, Ohio on May 5, 1930.  His first occupation was as a carpenter and furniture maker.  During the Korean War, he served in the Airforce teaching hand to hand combat at Hunter AFB in Savannah, GA.  He later attended the University of Cincinnati for his Bachelor’s degree in Biology and received his Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati Medical School.  After graduation, he moved his family to Bowling Green, Ohio and opened a Family Practice.  There he served the community as a “country doctor”, making house calls, delivering babies, and caring for the sick.  He later moved to Gainesville, Florida for a residency in Radiology at UF/Shands Teaching Hospital.  Eventually settling in Vero Beach, FL.  At the time of his retirement, he had offices in Vero Beach, Sebastian, Palm Bay and Titusville.

Upon retirement he returned to his roots as a gentleman farmer on a 200 acre farm in Decatur, TN.  He and his wife Jean were active in their local Methodist Church.  They shared a love of animals and were involved in domestic and wildlife animal rescue.  Don had a love of the land and could speak at length about all the flora and fauna.  He was a natural born teacher. 

Surviving are his daughter, Lisa Callaway, grandson, Joseph Callaway (Emily) great grandson, August Callaway, daughter-in-law Amy Slusher; brothers, Charles Slusher and Lloyd Slusher.

Don was preceded in death by his parents John and Rosie Slusher; siblings Robert, Vernon, James, Benjamin, William, Mary, Marie; wife Jean and son David.

Visitation is Friday 10-11am at Bowers Funeral Home, Decatur, TN.  Graveside service is 2:00pm at Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.

At the request of family, all services will be private.  Arrangements made through Beach Funeral Home Melbourne, FL and Bowers Funeral Home Decatur, TN.
