Obituary of Patricia Cowie

Patricia (Patsy) Wheeler Cowie, 88, of Pawling, NY, and Melbourne Beach, FL, died Dec. 9, 2021. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Graeme Cowie, and grandchildren Maya Skye Mojica and Graeme Fraser Mojica, as well as son-in-law Donny Moore and step-granddaughter Kasey Rae Moore. Patsy is preceded in death by her late husband John Cowie, who passed away in September 2020. Patsy was born in New York City in 1933, daughter of Arthur Wheeler and Albertine Marlowe Wheeler. Patsy attended The Hewitt School (class of 1951) and Bennett College (Class of 1953). Attending Bennett in Millbrook, NY first opened Patsy’s eyes to a deep-rooted adoration of Hudson Valley. Patsy’s worldly adventures ranged from fishing trips in Alaska to journeys to remote Peruvian villages to, of course, Buckie, Scotland, where a two-week vacation quickly turned into four years when she met and became engaged to her lifelong love, John Cowie. The two were married for 52 years. For 20 years, Patsy was a loving and selfless caregiver for her husband John, who suffered from a stroke in 2001 that left him unable to speak. When Patsy and John left Scotland ahead of their daughter Elizabeth’s birth, they settled into the small town of Pawling, New York. After working for Girl Scouts as the Dutchess County Cookie Coordinator for five years and with the Elegant Oven catering company for four years, Patsy found her calling as the Church Administrator at Christ Church on Quaker Hill in Pawling, New York. Patsy dedicated her talents, service, and love both to God and to the like-minded, caring people she befriended at the Church. Those people quickly became a beautiful extended family for Patsy – a lifelong group of friends who stood with her in good times and in bad. Patsy’s adventurous side lived on in Pawling in the kitchen, where she whipped up elaborate dishes left and right, much to the delight of her family and friends. Patsy was particularly well known for her vast array of confusing and specialized kitchen gadgets, with tools ranging from “olive pickers” to a collection of seven different cheese graters. Patsy’s famous ginger scones paired with golden syrup and homemade peppermint marshmallows were made with love – and a whole lot of sugar
