Obituary of Leon Erwin Pohlman

Leon Erwin Pohlman, 90, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday June 10, 2023. Leon was born in Lakefield, Minnesota in 1932. Leon grew up in the small farm town of Lakefield where he was the only one in his family to graduate high school.  He helped his mother on their farm until he joined the Army during the Korean War.  Using the GI bill, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Mankato State. In 1960 he met Betty McA’Nulty while both were Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) teachers in England.  They married in 1962. Leon and Betty raised a family of 3 and travelled the world while on assignments with DoDDS.  They lived in Germany, Italy, Turkey, Ethiopia, Cuba and Bermuda. Leon always said they had a “spectacular life”.  Upon retirement from DoDDS in 1991, Betty and Leon settled in Indian Harbour Beach, Florida.  They both worked part time teaching and spent time off travelling the United States and Canada. Leon’s beloved wife Betty passed on August 16, 2013. Leon continued to teach for Adult Education in Melbourne until retirement in 2018 when he was 85. Leon was a lifelong educator; teaching oversees for 30+ years and adult education for 20+ years.Leon is survived by his son Chris Pohlman of Indian Harbour Beach; daughters Theresa Pohlman of Indian Harbour Beach and Michelle Vinik of Gainesville; and four grandchildren (Sophia Vinik, Noah Pohlman, Sara Vinik, Jonah Pohlman.) A graveside service will be held at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery on Thursday June 22 at 11:00 am, where military honors will be conducted by the US Army Fort Stewart Funeral Military Honors.
