Betty Sojourner

Obituary of Betty Jane Sojourner

Betty Sojourner passed away December 21, 2023 at age 92. Betty’s life was dedicated to the love and care of her family and she will be missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. Her family moved between the Southeast and the Mid-West until settling in Orlando. She and her husband, Jim, met at Orlando Senior High School. They were married on New Year's Eve 1950 (they were 19) and were together for over 64 years before Jim’s death in 2014. Betty and Jim had four children:  Spike (Maggie), Cindy (Terry), Steve (Nancy), and Genie.  Their children are forever grateful for their storybook childhood and the values that mom and dad instilled in them to launch them into adulthood.

Betty was a stay-at-home mom until Spike started college and Genie started kindergarten. She then went to work for Radiation (later Harris Corporation) as a secretary.   She excelled in her role and worked for the Corporate Secretary of Harris where she routinely supported senior management of the company including the Board of Directors. She worked for Harris for 23 years.   Genie remembers her looking like an actress playing the role of a consummate professional every day she went to work but, that was her real life.

After Betty and Jim retired, they participated in many Elderhostel/Rhodes Scholar trips all around the United States.   They also spent time with family, including the annual 4th of July family reunion. Many hearts will fondly remember the amazing breakfast that Betty served.

While Betty will be sorely missed, we are heartened in our strong belief that mom and dad are now reunited.

In lieu of flowers, if anyone would like to make a memorial contribution, the William Child Hospice house was a true blessing for Betty.   The address of the William Child Hospice house is: 381 Medplex Pkwy NE, Palm Bay, FL 32907.

Additionally, donations to the Sojourner Family house fund in Betty’s honor would also honor her memory,
